Palpitations

Rapid heart rates or extra beats of the heart can give rise to the sensation of palpitations. The majority of these will not be associated with any serious heart disease. The history will usually guide the extent to what further tests will be needed. Basic tests will normally include an ECG, ambulatory ECG, an echocardiogram and perhaps a treadmill test. Further investigations may be indicated depending on the results, and could include cardiac MRI scan, CT scan of the heart or a coronary angiogram.
